By "double eyelid", we mean that there is a shallow groove in the upper eyelid skin above the eyelid margin. When the eyes are opened, the skin below the groove moves upward, while the skin above the groove is relaxed at the double eyelid groove and drapes downward to form a transverse skin fold, also known as the double eyelid.
From a morphological perspective, the difference between a single eyelid and a double eyelid is that, except for the absence of transverse folds at the upper eyelid, the skin of the entire upper eyelid of a single eyelid is thicker and appears relatively bloated, with slightly drooping skin. When viewed horizontally, the root of the eyelashes is covered, appearing shorter; As the saying goes, long eyelashes are like a beautiful curtain. Those with double eyelids have thinner upper eyelid skin, and their eyelashes appear longer, giving a clearer and more beautiful feeling.
There are also significant differences in the physiological structure between the two. The skin of the single eyelid is thicker, the subcutaneous tissue is higher, the orbicularis oculi muscle is relatively developed, there is more fat behind the orbicularis oculi muscle, the tarsal plate is thin and narrow, and the muscle that opens the eye, the levator palpebrae muscle, is underdeveloped, making it appear bloated; The opposite is true for double eyelids. Based on the anatomical structure, when a single eyelid is opened, the skin and orbicularis oculi muscle in front of the tarsal plate cannot be lifted together with the tarsal plate, so the upper eyelid cannot form a fold, presenting as a single eyelid. When the double eyelid is opened, the skin and orbicularis oculi muscle below the double eyelid line in front of the tarsal plate can be lifted together with the tarsal plate, resulting in a fold on the upper eyelid, which is manifested as the double eyelid.
From the perspective of the differences between the single eyelid and the double eyelid, the double eyelid surgery in plastic surgery is actually a process of modifying and restructuring the physiological structure of the single eyelid through surgical means based on aesthetic principles, and finally forming a double eyelid.
