The etiology of chronic prostatitis is very complex. Although there is considerable understanding of many of its pathogenesis, no breakthrough has been made. At present, it is believed that chronic prostatitis may be caused by primary or secondary diseases of the prostate and its surrounding tissues, organs, muscles and nerves. Even after these diseases have been cured or completely eradicated, their injuries and pathological changes are still playing an independent and continuous role. The center of its cause may be the joint effect of infection, inflammation and abnormal pelvic floor neuromuscular activity. Therefore, the role of a single factor cannot be overemphasized. No single organ or single pathogenesis can reasonably explain many complex clinical manifestations of prostatitis. It is often the result of various factors acting together through different mechanisms, one or more of which may play a key role.
