The prostate is the largest accessory gland in male organs. The prostate is located just below the back of the bladder, at the bottom of the human pelvis, near the perineum. If riding a bicycle with improper attention, it can excessively stimulate the prostate, causing it to swell, congest, or damage, and obstructing the excretion of prostate fluid, leading to prostate inflammation.
The main cause of prostatitis caused by cycling is incorrect riding posture. If the seat is too high, it is not suitable for the rider's short stature and body shape, which not only causes physical discomfort and difficult coordination of movements when riding, but also causes constant friction between the perineum and the seat due to the rider's ability to barely swing up and down, left and right, and pedal. Especially if the front of the seat is high and the rider's center of gravity is rearward, or if the road is rough and uneven and the vehicle is severely bumpy when driving, it is more likely to stimulate the perineum, causing prostate congestion, swelling, and damage.
"When the prostate is inflamed, the early manifestations are mainly swelling or pain in the perineum, a feeling of sagging in the anus, and sometimes a small amount of white liquid drips out of the urethra after urination.". Over time, it can also lead to hypertrophy of the prostate. The enlarged prostate compresses the urethra, causing poor urination, weakness in urination, thinning, bifurcating, and even intermittent urination. It is difficult for patients to urinate completely every time, so the frequency of urination increases, especially at night.
To prevent prostatitis caused by cycling, the most important thing is to adjust the position of the seat, with a moderate height. It is best to choose a cushion for the seat, and the front part of the seat should be slightly lower than the rear. People who often ride bicycles are advised to quit smoking and alcohol to avoid aggravating prostate congestion. After a long ride, you can take a hot seat bath (with a water temperature of about 40 ℃) to promote local blood circulation. If the prostate has early signs of mild inflammation, cycling should be suspended. If the symptoms are obvious, seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
