HPV, namely human papillomavirus, is a papillomavirus a belonging to the Pleuroviridae family. It is a spherical DNA virus, which causes the proliferation of squamous epithelium of human skin and mucosa. There are more than 100 small species, often showing symptoms such as verruca vulgaris and genital warts (Genital wart). HPV infection has a wide range of routes, including sexual infection, intimate contact, mother to child infection, and even through contact with the infected person's Household goods.
Zhang Qiushi, the chief gynecologist of the Second People's Hospital of Guangdong Province, stated that 99.6% of cervical cancer patients are caused by HPV infection, and about 80% of women are infected with HPV at least once in their lifetime, which means that 4 out of 5 women are infected with HPV at a certain stage in their lives.
HPV is divided into high-risk and low-risk types
1. Low risk HPV
About 12 low-risk HPVs, which do not cause cervical cancer. However, these HPV can cause genital Genital wart or very weak cervical cell changes. There are 6, 11, 40, 42, 43, 44, 53, 54, 61, 72, 73, and 81 low-risk HPVs. Among them, HPV6 and 11 are the most common low-risk HPV, and 90% of genital Genital wart is related to them.
2. High risk HPV
High risk HPV can cause abnormal changes in cervical cells. If abnormal cells are not treated in time, they may develop into Cervical cancer. The 13 most common high-risk HPVs, 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 56, 58, 59, and 68. Among them, types 16 and 18 are the most common, and about 70% of cervical cancer is related to them. In addition, according to the research of the National Cancer Institute, about 10% of women infected with HPV16 and HPV18 developed high cervical precancerous lesions within 3 years after infection, and 20% of women developed high cervical precancerous lesions within 10 years (about 7% of other high-risk HPVs).
HPV is not just targeted at women
Most people believe that HPV is only related to women, and men don't have to worry, but it's actually not the case. Skin high-risk HPV is associated with vulval cancer, Penile cancer, Anal cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer cancer and other malignancies. Mucosal high-risk HPV is associated with Cervical cancer, rectal cancer, Oral cancer, tonsillar cancer, etc.
